Smart bulb or smart relay: which do you choose?
Do you want to make your lighting smart? You generally have two options: using smart bulbs or controlling your existing lighting with a smart relay.
Both solutions are suitable for home automation, but each has its own ideal application.
When should you choose a smart bulb?
With a smart bulb, the intelligence is built into the bulb itself. This allows you, depending on the model, to switch, dim, and sometimes even adjust the color or color temperature of the light. Smart bulbs are particularly interesting for mood lighting and individual fixtures. Smart Home Lighting Control: Switches vs. Bulbs vs. Modules
Ideal for:
✅ Mood lighting
✅ Table lamps and floor lamps
✅ RGB lighting
✅ Adjustable color temperature
✅ Situations where you do not want to modify the electrical installation
One point of attention is that the traditional switch must remain on. If you cut the power, the smart bulb is no longer wirelessly reachable.
When should you choose a smart relay?
A smart relay is installed within the electrical system and controls standard lighting. This allows you to keep your existing switches and fixtures while still adding smart features. Smart relays vs smart switches: which is right for you?
Ideal for:
✅ Ceiling lighting
✅ Hallways, toilets, and bathrooms
✅ Garage and outdoor lighting
✅ Motion-controlled lighting
✅ Fixed home automation
Do you also want to be able to dim? You can combine a smart dimmer module with suitable dimmable lighting.
What should you choose?
Our practical rule of thumb:
Smart bulb → mood, color, and individual control
Smart relay → fixed lighting and integrated automation
For a fully smart home, a combination is often the most interesting approach: smart relays for fixed lighting and smart bulbs where color and mood are important.
